This album presents the perfect glory of one of the best percussion ensembles associated with the temple arts of Kerala. This traditional percussion ensemble ‘Thayampaka’ begins with a prelude ‘Kotti Vaikkal’ in a 7-beat and 1-beat cycle by the supporting artistes, whereas the main artiste starts the performance with 2 beats at the last stroke of ‘Kotti Vaikkal’. The performance has 3 phases that consists of Pathikal (Phase 1), Koor (Phase 2) and Etavattam, Moonnam Vattam, Etanila and Irukita (Phase 3). A type of solo chenda performance, the performance begins at a slow pace scaling on to mid-tempo and culminating in high tempo. The main artiste improvises and innovate the grip of rhythm and techniques with brilliance. The notable part of Thayampaka performance is that certain rhythmic patterns have influenced the ‘Thani Avarthanam’ of Carnatic music concerts. This album has Chithali M. Rama Marar performing Thayampaka in classic style.
