This album presents the perfect glory of one of the best percussion ensembles associated with the temple arts of Kerala. This traditional percussion ensemble ‘Panchavadyam’ is well known for performing at the Thiruvambady Temple as part of the ‘Madathil Varavu’ festival. Of the 5 instruments, Timila, Maddalam, Ilathalam and Idakka are percussion instruments while the Kombu is a wind instrument. The performance begins with the conch blowing 3 times, each producing the sound of ‘Om’. The setting of time tempo is the framework for the rest of the performance that is characterised by a pyramid-like rhythmic structure with constant increases in tempo and a proportional decrease in the number of beats in cycles. It is based on 7 beat Triputa tala and has 4 phases, in which phase 1 consists of 4 stages of Onnamkalam (1st speed), Rendamkalam (2nd speed), Moonamkalam (3rd speed), Naalamkalam (4th speed), Madhyakalam (mid-tempo), Ekakalam (intermediate tempo) and Triputakalam. The performance concludes with Eka tala in phase 4. In this album, Chithali M. Rama Marar provides vibrant performance of Panchavadyam with perfect rhythmic command.
